Question: My husband, age 70 has just been told he has blood in his stool and one side of his prostate is a little harder than the other. His PSA number is 5.something and has been rising in the last 10 years. He is making an appointment with his urologist. What can you tell me? Worried wife.

Brief Answer:
Following causes to consider;wait for tests results first....

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear XXXXXXX

I have gone through the medical history of your husband and understood your worries.

1. The presence of blood in stool might be due to:
- hemorrhoids
- inflammation/infection disease of the bowels
- malign pathologies

2. If the blood is confirmed by occult blood test, then, further investigations are recommended to determine the right cause:
- culture of stool
- colonoscopy
- abdominal ultrasound

3. His PSA is raising during the last years, also needs further investigations to understand why this trend:
- if one side of his prostate is little harder, then biopsy of prostate is advised to determine the right diagnosis
- inflammation (prostatitis) is also to consider
- prostate calcification is a normal process occurring by aging and should be also considered

It is not the case to precipitate into final conclusions, so, try to relax and wait for results to get in first.

Once you have the reports, you can send a copy to me for further analysis and opinion.
All the best!
