What Causes Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: Hello,
For the past two months, I have been seeing small to medium amounts of red and black blood mixed in with my stool and hasn't gone away. I see this almost every time I use the bathroom. Since i have been taking Nexium (started about 6 months ago) my stool is normally light brown. I spoke to my doctor and he sent me to have blood work done. I got the blood test results back and everything was perfect, except the bad cholesterol was a little high, which is no XXXXXXX because I eat a lot of fast food. My question is could I have colon cancer even if my blood test came back good?

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy advised

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns .

As you have noted blood in feces, I highly recommend to run colonoscopy to determine whether hemorrhoids are present or tumors.

For the moment, I advise to avoid constipation and discuss it further with your gi specialist.

I quit taking NEXIUM and I think the problem went away.

The black I was seeing in my stool was undigested black olives. I found this out last night when I probed my stool. Today, I saw very little red and not sure if it was even blood, it could have been undigested tomatoes. I have noticed within one day that my stool is no longer pale brown, but a darker color of brown instead. So I think I may be alright after all. I read that NEXIUM will cause GI disorders and bleeding. That is one of the many side effects and it was the only medication or supplement I have been taking.

Brief Answer:
Should make sure no other causes of bleeding

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

If I was your caring doctor would advise to go further with examination like colonoscopy.

GI problems and bleeding is not a common side effect of Prisolec or Nexium. That's why if I was your caring doctor would make sure you are not having other organic problems.

If you don't find any blood in stool further, then it is safe. But please be very observant for any further findings.

Hope it was of help!
