What Causes Blood In Stools ?
My husband who is 45 years old, has noticed blood in this motion earlier today. He has had this happen on a few occasions but this is the first time I’ve seen it and it is quite a lot. Is there cause for concern? I have booked him in to see the GP today, but any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks for the query.
Noticing blood in the stools is a common problem, the cause may range from harmless conditions like hemmorhoids/piles to serious conditions like cancers, hence this surely needs an evaluation.
The probable causes could be
1.Hemmorhoids
2.Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
3.Anal fissures
4.Any tumor, polyps or malignancies of the lower Gastrointestinal tract
5.Infections of the intestine
6.As a side effect of medications
7.Gastric ulcers
I suggest you ask him to see a General physician as planned and the doctor would need to examine him and order some investigations like blood counts, ultrasound scan abdomen and pelvis, urine tests, colonoscopy and other relevant tests.
Meanwhile, here are some tips to prevent such episodes in future
1.Plenty of XXXXXXX leafy vegetables and fruits , high fibre diet will help
2.Avoid fried items, hot and spicy food
3.Drink lots of water daily
4.Stop smoking and drinking alcohol
5.Avoid coffee, tea and aerated drinks
6.Follow a regular exercise and sleep pattern, reduce anxiety and stress.
Hope this answers your query, I am available for follow ups as well
