What Causes Blood In Urine Along With Back Pain?
Question: About 5 days ago, I passed what looked like a small blood clot in my urine, today, it happened again. There's no pain just this little glob of blood. Could this be prostate or bladder or what?

blood in the urine needs investigation to exclude cancer, particularly when no pain was felt. Potential causes of hematuria may include:
- renal stones (usually painful)
- prostate disease (benign prostate hyperplasia or cancer)
- urinary tract infection (usually with frequency and other symptoms)
- urinary tract cancer (kidneys, bladder etc)
- glomerulonephritis (with hypertension, edema, proteinuria)
There are a few other less common causes.
When painless hematuria occurs, meticulous investigation is warranted to exclude cancer. A good place to start is a urinary tract ultrasound scan which is easy to do and may provide evidence (or clues) for the diagnosis. There are more specific tests for that but this is an easy test, without radiation exposure and fairly cheap.
A urinalysis and microscopic analysis of the red blood cells in the urine specimen are very important tests as well. The urinalysis may detect signs of infection, glomerulonephritis and confirm hematuria. The microscopic analysis may detect intact or fragmented red blood cells. Intact red blood cells usually originate from the lower urinary tract. Fragmented red blood cells may originate from the kidneys.
After this initial assessment, more specific radiological or endoscopic tests might be needed depending on the results.
