What Causes Blood In Vomit And Black Stools?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Sep 2016
Question: My brother thought he had food poisoning yesterday. He threw up and last night vomited what we thought was a blood clot. He's been vomiting a reddish liquid since early this morning. He had a bowel movement this morning and saw that it was a black stool, unusual for him. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
Send him to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the health situation your brother is in.

Vomiting is a sign of possible gastrointestinal problems like food poisoning, infection, inflammatory/ulcerative conditions and/or gallbladder problems.

The blood you saw vomiting this morning is due to laceration of upper gi tract mucosa from yesterday vomit.

Having black stool is not a good sign. Please send him to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment.

He needs further diagnostic tests like abdominal ultrasound, colonoscopy, complete blood count and biochemistry tests to determine the right diagnosis.

For the moment, I advise to:
- keep him well hydrated, advise to drink plain water with ORS if he keeps, if not, needs intravenously perfusion
- let him rest
- probiotics, antacids can help but when he'll be ready to keep them

Once again, send him to ER as soon as possible.
