What Causes Blood In Vomit?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Oct 2014
Question: Yesterday morning I was hung over and I vomited 4 times then began to dry heave my vomit was clear. I felt better so I drank a red bull 20 minutes later I felt sick and got sick and it was clear the first vomit then the second vomit was bright red blood. I didn't get sick anymore. I called my doctor who told me it sounds like I made a tear in my esophagus and if it happens ago and doesn't stop bleeding to go to the we. It didn't happen anymore I made my self sick last night and the vomit was clear and also first thing this morning I did the same and it was clear. Should I still be worried or is my doctor right and it was just a tear.

Brief Answer:
Blood in the vomitus has to be investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As your doctor said, blood in the vomitus Could be due to Esophageal tear.
Another common cause is Bleeding Duodenal ulcer/Gastric ulcer. It may bleed for some time and stop . Sometimes, it may bleed continuously and intervention might be needed.
As your vomitus is clear,Nothing to worry as of now.
But, you should consult your doctor and get an Upper GI Endoscopy to know the exact cause.
I prescribe Rabeprazole tablet 20mg twice daily along with Sucralfate syrup to my patients with similar complaints.

Hope I answered your query.
If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards

Thank you sir I was dry heaving pretty hard and the time when blood was present was very forceful so I'm hoping just a small tear nothing more hopefully not any kind of cancer but the good thing is that it is clear vomit now no need to go to the hospital correct?

And my initial vomit first thing in the morning which was 4 or 5 vomits was clear then the blood 20 min later does that sound more like a tear to you
