What Causes Blurred Vision, Numbness In Thigh And Headaches?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: Hi, I had an MRI due to blurred vision in my left eye lasting a couple of weeks, numbness in my right thigh and pins and needles in my feet, hands and arms lasting several weeks. A few days after my blurred vision I experienced headaches that went on and off for a couple of days. I also had facial pain near my right ear and jaw and tingling and numbness on the left side of my face. I also have had periods where I have had loss of strength in my right hand for up to 24 hours at a time in the past. Xrays showed no signs of arthritis in my hands, which I have in my mid back. The temporary loss of strength in my hand has resulted in dropped pots off the stove and giving up tennis. I have a history of my thigh going numb when I am standing cooking and ironing and serious fatigue. My MRI showed hyperintense foci of the frontal lobe and was probably due to migraines but MS couldn't be ruled out. I don't ever recall having a migraine as such and my doctor said MS was an extreme possibility and it was probably just migraines. I would need more 'episodes' to be considered for MS. I'm not convinced as I have had the tingling, numbness and suddenly not being able to walk in a straight line for years but never thought to tell any doctor. Instead I sort regular chiropractic care. I just feel like my GP dismissed my concerns too quickly.

Brief Answer:
Please upload your MRI CD/images and report.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I have read through your comprehensive clinical history.MS,no doubt, is one of the possibilities, according to your history.

However,MRI findings are crucial for diagnosis in such a scenario.

I would like to have a look at your MRI.If possible, please upload your MRI CD on google drive and share the drive link here in the follow-up question,so that I can view your MRI with my .dicom viewer.
If its not possible for you to upload the CD(which is preferable),please click good quality images of MRI and upload them along with report.

Along with, please upload the document on which your neurologist noted down the findings of physical examination.

I shall be glad to have you in follow-up with the needful.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,

Thank you doctor Panwar. Unfortunately I was not given a copy of my MRI CD. This is what the MRI report said.
Findings:
No focus of restricted diffusion.
No blood products are noted on SW images.
Basal ganglia and thalami normal.
Brain stem and cerebellar hemisphere normal.
T2 hyperintense foci are seen in frontal subcortial region bilaterally, also left parietal subcortical region are non-specific in aetiology, may represent ischaemic or demyelinating lesion.
Corpus callosum, sella and proximal cord are normal.
The flow voids are unremarkable.
Conclusion:
T2 hyperintense foci supratentorial white matter are non-specific in aetiology could represent foci of small vessel ischaemia.sequelae to migraine however possibility of demyelinating lesion is not excluded.
PS. I am still waiting to get in to see a neurologist. They will contact me when the neurologist has triarged my referral. My GP expects I will not get in to see him for another couple of months.

Brief Answer:
Neurological examination and follow-up MRI.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing further details.

Its unfortunate here that I am not able to view your MRI scan. That's because- it's very important in your case to have a look at the MRI for key things such as the site of lesions and contrast enhancement pattern.MS patients have some characteristic features on MRI, which one can't get to know from this report.

However,a neurological examination and a follow-up MRI appears warranted.Follow-up MRI is mandatory to see if lesions increase in number and fresh lesions emerge at new sites.

Further, please try to procure your MRI CD.That will help me to give a better opinion.

Also,do you have a history of - Hypertension,Diabetes, chronic smoking or alcohol intake?

I shall be glad to have you in follow-up with further details.

Regards

No hypertension (I have fabulous BP - usually around 100 over 65), no diabetes and have been regularly tested. I am a smoker and have a glass or two of wine most nights.
PS - Had an ultra sound on my veins down to my toes 6 months ago - all clear, no problems there and yes the cardiologist told me to stop smoking and to take an aspirin a day. Trying - but a 28 year addiction is damn hard to give up.

Brief Answer:
Chronic smoking and alcohol, can also contribute to white matter lesions.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Chronic smoking and alcohol intake are other factors, which may contribute to white matter lesions. So,though you have multiple factors present to explain these lesions.MS would be excluded only with follow-up MRI's.Further, please visit a neurologist for a dedicated physical examination to see for any neurological deficits. That will also help towards the diagnosis.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up else please close the thread, rate it and write a review.
