What Causes Blurred Vision While On Ritalin?

Question: My daughter 30 years old was prescribed a dosage increase for her Ritalin just last week from 20 mg.time release to 30 mg. She says that her vision is blurred. Is this a common side effect maybe caused by the increased dosage? How concerned should we be and what medications for ADHD would not have that side effect? Should we wait to see if the side effect wears off?

I am so sorry to hear about this blurred vision that she has reported. This is a rare but recognized side effect of Ritalin. I will suggest that she continues for a while while we monitor to see if the vision would re-establish spontaneously. If it doesn’t, only at this time would we consider revising the treatment. However, most persons recover spontaneously from blurred vision which accompanies dosage changes of Ritalin.
