What Causes Breathing Difficulties After Taking Morphine Post Knee Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Nov 2015
Question: I had surgery last year (knee replacement), and the day after the operation I was given too much medicine (morphine). My heart never stopped, but I was not breathing for approximately between 10 - 15 minutes. I am now having trouble with my speech, my memory, my vision and more. Could I have a brain injury from being without oxygen for that time? BTW - I am extremely physician friendly. My 4 uncles and my brother were all physicians. Everybody makes mistakes, even doctors and nurses. I just want to know if that event cause my brain problems? And can my brain recuperate on its own?

Brief Answer:
unlikely due to morphine. some other reason

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
As you mentioned that you had surgery last year and i assume that you are facing these complaints recently.
If there had been any brain hypoxic injury as you think it might be, these complaints would be immediate after the injury and not after so long time.
Also most common symptoms of hypoxic brain injury does have memory loss, but your other symptoms do not fit in. They are more severe than that like coma, seizures, stroke like picture.
That is why it is unlikely due to over sedation.
As you are going to consult a neurologist so you will be undergoing detailed examination and investigations like MRI brain.
Brain recuperation will depend on the cause of these recent complaints. If it is solved then brsin might recuperate from that.
Also a fundoscopy from opthalmologist will be helpful.
I hope i have answered your query well.
If you have any more query kindly write back to me will be happy to answer them.
Thank you
