What Causes Bright Red Spots On Legs?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Jul 2014
Question: Hi! I am 53 years old and just spent a week on an inner city mission trip in inner city XXXXXXX I walked alot!! During the week I would have splotches of bright red dots appear on my calves. After a day or so, they would fade away. If I stayed on my feet another day, then another round of dots would appear. They weren't painful, just very unsightly. I returned 4 days ago. My legs look fine.
Today though I was taking a nap- I am feeling very sluggish- and my hands went numb. I woke up and had to shake the tingles out of them.
Oh my gosh- I have the gender incorrrect. I am a 53 year old FEMALE!

Brief Answer:
? Cutaneous vasculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.

From your history and description, I would consider the possibilities of cutaneous vasculitis and pigmented purpuric dermatoses.

Cutaneous vasculitis is an inflammation around the blood vessels. It is not directly related to walking, but could worsen after prolonged exercise / walking.
It could be associated with inflammation around vessels of your nerves, kidneys and gut as well. So I would advise you to get a blood work done and to meet a physician to rule out any internal involvement. The cutaneous lesions may be transient.

The other possibility I would consider is a harmless entity called Pigmented purpuric dermatoses. However, this is not acute in onset nor is it transient. But a possibility considering your history of prolonged walking.

It would have been a lot easier if I could get a clinical picture of the lesion. However, I understand that they have now disappeared. If you happen to get them again, please upload a good quality picture.

Hope this helps you.
