Have you always had regular cycles ?
WHen was your last period, and when did you expect your next period ?
Have you been sexually active, when was the last time you had unprotected sex ?
Do you use birth control or other hormones ?
Normally , when your periods start, do they start off straight with a proper red flow or are they preceded by some amount of spotting ?
WHat is your height and weight ?
Stress, exercise, weight changes, travelling, smoking, drinking, late nights, erratic eating - all these can cause altered menstrual bleeding, do any of them apply in your case ?
Please do write back with these details so that I can provide you with a better answer.

SPOTTING IS NORMAL IN IRREGULAR CYCLES.
Detailed Answer:
WIth irregular cycles it is impossible to know your luteal phase.
Since how long are you trying to conceive ?
The best way to predict the ovulatory phase in irregular cycles is by follicular monitoring.
This measures the growth of the egg follicle with serial ultrasound scans , and documents and pinpoints ovulation precisely.
The spotting is very common with irregular cycles.
Have you had a workup for irregular periods ?
Polycystic ovaries are the commonest reason.
You need an internal exam, vaginal pelvic scan and hormonal levels - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone.
You need to lose weight, Metformin helps PCOS patients to ovulate and lose weight easily.
Spotting could have replaced your normal period, as you have irregular cycles.
But do take a pregnancy test to rule out a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.
Take care.
