What Causes Brownish Discharge From Breast With Normal Mammogram?
Question: I am 54 years old and it has been a couple of years since my last mammogram with negative results. My general practice doctor palpated my breasts in January during a routine exam with no lumps felt. For the past 2-3 months I have noticed a brownish discharge from only one breast. I do not normally where a bra as I stay at home. I have no other symptoms other than my nipples being sensitive and only notice the discharge when I feel my shirt is damp. I had a miscarriage in 1996 at 16 weeks and had a hysterectomy in 1997 with removal of my uterus and both ovaries. I do not have sex and have not had for approximately 14 years.

A papilloma is a harmless wart-like growth, usually about 1-2cm in size, found inside one of the breast ducts. The breast ducts carry milk from the gland to the nipple. The papilloma is usually just behind the nipple and can cause fluid or blood to seep out of the nipple.
It can be easily removed.
Although the discharge may be alarming, rest assured that it is not likely to be cancer. However, you should still get it checked by your GP so they can rule out breast cancer and offer you any necessary treatment.
