What Causes Burning Sensation In The Groin Area?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: I am a 39 year old female. For the last several weeks I have experienced a mild burning sensation in my groin area mostly in the afternoons/evenings. I mentioned it to my doc when I went for my thyroid check up and he felt my lymph nodes and said he doesn't feel anything out of the norm and its probably neuromuscular. My sciatic nerve has been bothering me. I actually cannot touch where the pain in when I try to point to the exact location is. When I try to palpate it, nothing is tender. It is more or less in the groin area closer to the front of my pubic bone. The pain has not gotten worse and isn't always there, but I do seem to notice it most afternoons and again it doesn't stop me from activities. Anti-inflammatories have no affect. I do have a yearly check up in about 4 weeks with my gyn. Does this sound like something that can wait until then. I do have anxiety and tend to worry about things more than the average person. I will say that when I am active and not thinking about it, I don't notice the pain. Its that mild. If it were something serious, would it have gotten worse by this time? Its been about 6-8 weeks.

Brief Answer:
Check for hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thanks for an elucidate history. This is very self-explanatory.

Mild burning- in the groin closer to pubic bone- 6 to 8 weeks duration- noticed in the afternoons- no effect of Anti-inflammatory medicines- noticed only when you are free-

This is a pain which is caused by stretching or entrapment of a small sensory nerve supplying that particular area.

You can certainly wait till your yearly check with your Gynecologist. This looks to be unrelated to the Sciatic nerve.

A simple test can be done you. You have to palpate the area above and lateral (sideways) to the pubic bone in the standing position- cough or strain hard. See if you can palpate a bulge thumping under your palm. If yes, this is a hernia and one of the most common cause of such type of pain.
I hope your Gynecologist will do the same test.

Thank you I don't really feel anything. I did this on both sides and each side is the same, but the mild pain is only on the right. I just wanted to make sure that this wasn't something that required immediate attention. I will mention hernia to my gynecologist. Hopefully, it is just a pinched nerve.

Brief Answer:
No need for immediate attention.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback and appreciation.

Since there is no hernia, there is no need of worry at the moment.

I hope your recent Thyroid function tests are normal and you have not undergone any strenuous activity, exercises or household work that might have sprained the lower abdominal musculature.

Thank you for your quick response. My first thought was some sort of strained abdominal muscle from a sinus infection that I had around the time that this started. I had a severe cough due to a post nasal drip and it would make sense that the coughing could have pulled a muscle. Does that take a long time to heal? And yes, my thyroid functions were fine and my Synthroid dosage remained the same.

Brief Answer:
Severe cough was the reason ( culprit)

Detailed Answer:
I think you are absolutely right in the thinking of severe coughing causing this type of problem.

As you know, the abdominal musculature is always on the working mode till one is fast-asleep. This will never give sufficient time to heal. There is going to be a chronic repetitive injury and eventually internal fibrosis causing ''pinched'' / entrapped nerve. And no one is going to explore for such an apparently small problem.

Good to know about controlled thyroid with the right doses.
