What Causes Burning Sensation In The Throat While Having GERD?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: I have had a odd variant of gerd. 5 years ago I just woke up with burning in my throat. After many courses of ppi's, zantac, gaviscon, and anything else that would possibly help this, I still had it very bad 24/7 for about 11 months. Somehow it seemed to get better and over last 4 years has not been terribble, only some flareups. I went for iron infusions (venefir) from july to october 31,2016. Right after last infusion the acidic gas bubbles that come up and burn my throat went crazy. It was like 5 years ago, fiery burning just in throat and nose and eyes burning. Feel like I'm being poisioned from my stomach. I had endoscopies and bravo test 4 years ago and they showed nothing. It feels like my stomach is a gas bubble machine and then the pressure just erupts into eshopogus. I never drank alcohol, or smoked and eat a very bland diet for obvious reasons. I have chronic daily headache with I am being treated for with not much success. plus i've had bowel immotility for 20 years, so i take about 70 mg. of ducolax 3 x week. even if I don't eat anything for 12 hours, as soon as I get up I feel that gas bubble come up. This is zapping the last bit of energy I have which is not much. My Question is can this venefir solution have triggered this acidic gas to torture me again. My ferritin level is 245 which I think is quite high. Iron level is about 110. all I know is that I didn't have this before all these infusions. If you have any thoughts on what I should do next it would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
GERD

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern for GI symptoms.
1) You might have GERD of severe variety in which stomach contents reflux back into esophagus upto mouth. This happen due to weak junction of esophagus to stomach.
2) Ideally, you should have repeat endoscopy to rule out a) GERD, b) hiatal hernia, c) gastritis and esophagitis, d) barrett's esophagus.
3) If endoscopy would come normal then you must do invasive 24 hour esophageal Ph monitoring test which is the gold standard test for GERD.
4) Iron supplementation does not flare up your GI symptoms, in fact severe gastritis related less absorption of iron from diet might be reason for iron deficiency in your case.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further query, I would be happy to help you.
Have a good day!
