What Causes Burning Sensation In The Vagina Post Recovery From UTI?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: What is the reason I still have vaginal burning if I have already been treated with an antibiotic for a UTI, and 2 weeks later with penicillin for strep throat, and then a two pill treatment for yeast infection. I am scheduled for a pelvic exam in September, but I'm so uncomfortable with a burning sensation, I am going to have to find out what's wrong before then. I have had this discomfort for almost 2 months.

Brief Answer:
You probably have atrophic vaginitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

From your notes it appears that there can be two possibilities for the vaginal burning.

1. The estrogen levels in the body decrease drastically at this age causing thinning and drying of vaginal mucosa (atrophy of vaginal mucosa). Even the friction of labia with undergarments can initiate soreness and burning. Even the urinary infection like symptoms that you suffered can be attributed to this vaginal and vulval thin and dry mucosal lining. That is the reason for not detecting any infection in the urine.

2.There may be still infection lingering causing this burning.

Do consult Gynecologist for internal examination. It is easy to diagnose atrophic vaginitis by examination. If confirmed your doctor will prescribe estrogen cream for local application. If infection is suspected she may take swabs for culture and sensitivity so that you can be given right medicines.

Do not use douche.
Do not use scented soaps or perfumes.
Use mild soap.
Use cotton undergarments.

I hope this is helpful.
If you have further concerns, do write to me.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
