What Causes Burning Sensation In Tongue Post Consumption Of Raw Garlic?
I had been eating a whole bulb of raw garlic everyday (broken into cloves and ate them throughout the day) for the past 1 week. Now I am experiencing some burnt in my tongue. Is there any health risk for doing this and any long term side effect?
These are side effects of taking raw garlic

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.
I understand your concern.
Mouth, throat and stomach burn are common side effects of taking raw garlic. Generally these subside with prolonged use, but if these persist and cause a chronic concern, then you should discontinue and consult a doctor. Any serious long term side effect of eating garlic has not been found yet. Only diabetic patients and patients allergic to garlic are asked to avoid it.
Garlic is generally used to lower blood cholesterol levels and sometimes to lower blood pressure. It also has some anti-cancer properties which is yet to be clinically proved. Hence, if you could tell me why you are taking garlic, then I might be able to help you with some alternatives if the problem persists.
For burning sensation in mouth, avoid alcohol, smoking and tobacco use if any, avoid spicy food and apply benzalkonium chloride and choline salicylate combination etc inside mouth. Gargling with plain water will be helpful too.
Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.
Thank you for answering.
I suspect that I am having candidiasis. That's why I am taking raw garlic. I am also taking coconut oil, turmeric, sodium bicarbonate and probiotics.
What would be your advice?
Regards.
Give a detailed history; get clinically checked
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Sorry for the late reply.
You have said that you suspect to have candidiasis. Candidiasis has a variable presentation depending upon the site of involvement. It can be oral, vaginal, systemic etc. So I need to know which site or system of your body is affected. Depending on that, oral or topical antifungals like fluconazole or clotrimazole can be taken.
But first of all, a proper diagnosis should be made. So kindly tell me your symptoms and a detailed history so that I can help you further with your treatment. Also, you can consult a doctor and get clinically checked and diagnosed.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
Non specific symptoms; needs investigations and evaluation
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
The symptoms you have mentioned are non specific and though few of them can be found in systemic candidiasis, the chances of other causes are more.
To rule out the causes, some investigations should be done like complete blood count, ESR, CRP, fasting and post-prandial blood sugar, TSH, Stool culture and stool for occult blood etc.
Also, a consultation with a doctor for a thorough clinical examination is what I would suggest. A chronic low graded stomach infection or a throat infection has to be ruled out. The weight loss issue is also to be taken into account.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
