Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.
If your wife would have presented to me as an outpatient,I would have told that it has to be interpreted in correlation with the clinical symptoms and signs.
Although, calcification in some of the brain structures(basal ganglia, pineal gland, chroid plexus, dura mater) is normal in adults. This calcification increases with age,and is asymptomatic. This type of calcification is called physiological or non-pathological(not associated with disease).
However,if patient has neurological signs and symptoms, then basal ganglia calcification has to be evaluated for pathological causes, which can be metabolic and degenerative.
In more than 95% of the CT scans we see in clinics,it is a physiological calcification, that we see.Probably, same is the case with your wife.
However, please follow-up and tell if she has any symptoms. Why did she underwent CT scan?It will help make a better interpretation.
Waiting for your follow-up.
Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
MD,DM(Neurology)
