What Causes Chronic Prostatitis?
Question: Hi, ive been dealing with chronic prostatitis and have had several semen culture with gram stains done to find out if it was bacterial. Will this standard semen culture show STI;s like N.G? just want to make sure.
Brief Answer:
N.G doesn't grow in the standard culture medium
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
If you had unsafe sex and are suspecting gonorrhoeae as the cause of your chronic prostatitis, it may be possible to grow the organism on semen culture. But you should inform the lab to culture the sample specifically for N . gonorrhoea as it is a fastidious organism and does not grow in the routine culture.

Brief Answer:
You didn't get prostatitis from the exposure
Detailed Answer:
If her fingers were contaminated with N . gonorrhoea, it is possible to get a gonococcal proctitis. If so you would have a very painful condition with plenty of rectal discharge. Since you did not have any such symptoms, you didn't have a rectal infection. Even if you had a rectal infection you cannot get prostatitis as the route of infection is different.
So relax. you don't have a gonococcal infection from that risky behaviour.
Take care not to have any unsafe sexual activity in the future.

Hi. Just one other question. I've been having a stiff neck with a bit of swelling on my right side. Have you ever had someone get N.G meningitis from untreated N.G infection? Is this common? Thanks again
Brief Answer:
Likely to be a muscle spasm not meningitis
Detailed Answer:
Don't worry.
The neck problem is likely to be a cervical muscular spasm. There is a possibility of servical spodylosis. There's hardly any chance of meningitis.
These days one hardly sees a Gonococcal meningitis as most people treat the primary infection with antibiotics.
