Question: I had a very serious cold for about two weeks, really bad cough and chest congestion, after feeling better for a few days I now have a burning sensation in my chest exasperated when laying down to sleep, but much better when sitting up or walking and doing everyday tasks, sleeping is becoming impossible because I can't lay down without the burning sensation recurring? This has been going on for about three days and simple ibuprofen isn't helping, got compresses do help and a hot bath completely relieves the pain.
Brief Answer:
get repeat chest x-ray done
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
I am glad you have recovered and feeling better now.
The burning sensation could be due to minimal pleurisy or left over chest congestion or may be pain killer induced GERD. I would suggest you to get a repeat chest x-ray done to look for residual infection.
Use a propped up position to help you sleep better.
The fact that ibuprofen is not helping you rules out any muscular cause for your symptom.
Continue to take the hot compresses and bath as they are helping you.
Do thorough steam inhalation thrice daily to remove the pent up secretions in the airway.
Take bland diet, and consume warm food and fluids.
Since the cold was serious and the cough bad with chest congestion, it would take you some more time to recover completely.
You can take antacids like Omeprazole to see if that helps with the burning sensation too.
Get well soon.
I am still have severe burning in my chest especially at night, it is nearly gone during the day with only occasional discomfort, when sitting up I am fine, did yard work yesterday with minimal discomfort, tried to go to sleep and instantly was in pain. Have a slight cough. No fever. At night the sensation goes up into the top of my spine and neck. No shortness of breath. Chills when trying to sleep. Cannot see a physician until Monday at the soonest as I am out of town. Drank warm teas and lots of water, ate bland diet all day. Need some type of remedy. Thank you!
Brief Answer:
pleuritic chest pain
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I still think of pleuritic chest pain as possibility.
Please do not exert yourself physically until the time you get better or you get to see your doctor.
Did you take antacids like Omeprazole as suggested?
Please sleep in a propped up position. That would help you.
You can wait until Monday to see the doctor. However, if your symptoms worsen it is better to get it checked at the Emergency room at once.
Continue to take lots of water and bland diet.
Do steam inhalation as well.
