What Causes Congestion In Head, Chest, Recurring Fever, Sore Throat And Occasional Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 May 2016
Question: I have had flu-like symptoms for almost 3 months. head and chest congestion, recurring fever, sore throat, and occasional diarrhea. I've lost almost 10 pounds over 3 months because of lack of appetite. no major medical issues in history. been through 2 rounds of keflex but was allergic to it. went to Dr and ER twice with no diagnosis. blood work and tests were normal, was just slightly dehydrated. I am allergic to amoxicillin, erythromycin, z-pack, keflex, and cleocin. can I try pau d'arco, or do you have any other suggestions? I'd like to try a holistic approach. nothing else has worked.

Brief Answer:
stepwise management.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and following is symptom wise approach:

1. since most of the blood work and tests are normal thus with 'flu like symptoms' one must exclude the possibility of:
. Hypersensitive pneumonitis [chest X-ray is advisable]
. Irritable bowel syndrome [occ. diarrhea, any history of malabsorption]?
. Since there is no major medical issues thus any history of anxiety/ depression?
. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome [CFS]?

2. What is your assessment of weight loss:

i. Did you have gross weight loss [needs examination/Investigation= chest x-ray for tuberculosis [fever, lack of appetite, diarrhea], ultrasound abdomen for any mass]?

Or whether it is -

ii. Minimal weight loss which just needs some good diet and exercise?

3. Any history of addiction to alcohol or drugs, malabsorption syndromes?

4. Examine for Hb%, WBC, ESR, FBS & Urine Routine and if weight loss is severe one has to thoroughly examine and investigate the patient.

5.

i. You should participate in outdoor activities and exercises like running, swimming, Yogasanas, Surya-namaskar.

ii. Take protein rich diet (legumes sprouted pulses/cereals, milk with protein powder (which are required for manufacturing of antibodies)

iii. Take vitamin A,B complex ,C ,E in diet which helps in strengthening the immune system.

iv. avoid: heavy, slimy food along with fetid odor and unpleasant sight and take : old rice (1 year old but not diseased), green gram, fresh green vegetables, banana, pomegranate, garlic, ginger, raisins, black pepper, clarified butter, butter milk, regular brushing of teeth and tongue cleaning, bathing, lemon, salt, mint, morning walk.

6. Daily Regime

i. Don’t skip breakfast. Take your lunch between 12 -1 PM which is the peak period of Pitta (responsible for digestion) and have your dinner 2 hours before sleeping.

ii. Make sure you do not travel, do strenuous exercise, or indulge in sexual activities within one hour after meal

iii. Proper sleep with proper diet is the key to healthy living in Ayurveda.

v. Avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine, eating late at night, stress, and drink water instead of colas

v. Practice Yoga, Meditation and go for an exercise regime..

vi. Walk a while after meal to help digestion

7. Pau d' Arco Tea fights candida, cancer, inflammation and by promoting weight loss, helps in diabetes and coronary disease and since it causes NAUSEA in regular or low doses thus can cause vomiting leading to electrolyte imbalance and DEHYDRATION [which you have already experienced] thus talk with your health care provider before taking the product.

Please revert back with replies to above questionnaire, so that treatment aspect with further Dietary Management can be initiated.

Chest x rays were normal. Dr said weight loss and dehydration was from diarrhea. I recently got diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and possible gluten allergy. I also have panic disorder and history of alcoholism, although I've been sober for 6 years now. I am in therapy abdnon medication for the anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. Since IBS is a functional disorder thus it should be diagnosed when other systemic cause of weight loss/diarrhea is/are excluded.
PS. Is it a Gastroenterologist diagnosis or general Physician opinion?

2. 'possible' is opinion or have you gone for gluten sensitivity test?

3. ANXIETY & ALCOHOLISM
and because you have anxiety this reflects ‘emotional withdrawal symptoms” rather than “physical withdrawal symptoms” i.e. you have a constant fear of being judged or evaluated by and has resulted in anxious thoughts and anxious behavior.

. Avoid: excess physical –mental exertion, sun exposure, corrylium, smoking, errhine therapy, betel leaves, gruel, soup, day time sleeping, garlic, ginger, onion, spicy-heavy- junk food, mustard oil, pickles.
. Take: mint, coriander, tomato, cumin, plenty of water, vitamins and mineral supplements, apple, banana, grapes, dates

. You can practice: bhujangasana, halasana, paschimottasana, sarvangasana, shalabhasana, shavasana and vakrasana and pranayamas like bhastrika and kapalbhati.
. Lemon juice mixed with sugar in a glass of water helps release stress removing hormones from the body and bring mind at peace/rest.

i. Take 1 spoon black pepper powder and 5 spoons jaggery in 4 cup water and boil till 2 cups remain, filter it and drink for 1 month.
ii. Take 3 teaspoons of bitter gourd with a glass of water every morning for a month.
iii. Mix 4-5 dates in half glass of water and drink 2 times daily for a month.
iv. Regular intake of Apple reduces thirst for wines or any type of liquor.
v. Honey has the power to neutralize harmful effects of alcohol.
vi. Apple, almond, banana, broccoli, cantaloupe, melon, carrot, cashew nut, corn, cauliflower, grapes, guava, lemon, XXXXXXX orange, pineapple, soybean, spinach have anti oxidant and detoxifying properties so take them in plenty.

4. PANIC DISORDER

. Because panic attacks are repeatable which means you feel endangered and unable to escape which means there is ‘fear of fear’ i.e. vicious anxiety- panic attack- anxiety cycle, thus before taking panic attacks to be due to anxiety or depression make sure you have ruled out following medical conditions like overactive thyroid, low blood glucose, use of excess caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines or heart problem.

PS. practice relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation but also Pranayam [anulom vilom] which will strengthen the relaxation response of body as opposite to stress response during panic attacks, [i.e. hyperventilation].

It was a general physician opinion. I am going to call her tomorrow to schedule a test for gluten allergy. in the past she said she can refer me to a GI doctor if i want. for anxiety, we have ruled out thyroid problems, low blood glucose. I got tests for both of those issues. no drug problems
