What Causes Constant Vaginal Spotting While On Contraceptive Pills?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jan 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
I am taking a 21 Days Contraceptive pill. This is my second month of the course. I just finished having my periods three days back. It was for 5 days. But the flow was not as heavy as it normally happened to me. Also, there is constant spotting during the normal days as well when I regularly have the medicine. My doctor told that the medicine might cause a slight tendency of gastric or acidity for the initial days of starting of with that medicine. But she didn't mention about spotting. Is this spotting thing also a side effect of contraceptive pill? Please help.

Brief Answer:
With drawal bleeding.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
If you take contraceptive pills continuously without giving break in between then you will not have withdrawal bleeding or periods in between, but if you give gaps in between your contraceptive pill pack then you will have withdrawal bleeding or periods. The regular birth control pills are designed to let you have withdrawal bleeding/periods similar to your menstrual cycles (resembling your normal hormonal and period pattern), and hence these should not be used back-to-back without allowing for period in between. You can experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting if you use the regular ones back-to-back without allowing for periods. The spotting that you describe could be the breakthrough bleeding. Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately. Drink plenty of water. Take adequate rest. Maintain healthy diet and lifestyle.
Take care.

Thanks for your response doctor. The periods I got this time was even before I could finish my complete course of contraceptive, that is of 21 Days. The cycle commenced on 13 Dec when I had 3 pills still left in the pack (My last cycle was on 21 Dec). Hence I stopped having the pills. I started of with a new pack from 16 Dec. So I am not having the pills continuous. But slight spotting is still happening now and then.
Also, please tell me, does contraceptive also affect the amount of bleeding? I didn't have that much bleeding this time as I used to have before taking this pill.

Brief Answer:
Take continuously.

Detailed Answer:
As you have started the pills now on 16th take them continuously. Even if you get spotting don't stop them for 21 days. Lets see in this cycles if the bleeding is still less and getting the periods before the course is complete. You'll have to get some investigations done or the tablet should be changed

Take care.
