Question: I have been coughing out blood in my sputum in the morning when i wake up for about a week? about 6 coughs, and then its all clear. i am a 30 yr old male smoker. have not smoked for 3 days now. It all started when i had the flu, as soon as all my symptoms were gone from the flu, the next morning i started looking at blood in my phlegm. i went to the doctor, he prescribes augumentin antibiotics, and a cough syrup. i feel my phlegm is gone but still wake up coughing blood as soon as i wake up. i am on my third day of antiobiotics and it seems no different as to the blood in the morning, how long does it take the antibiotics to start working, or see some results?

Brief Answer:
infection likely cause

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Blood in sputum is very common in complaints like chest infections and smoking history. Bronchitis and pneumonia are two common causes for it.

I suggest you finish with the antibiotics and quit smoking for ever and see if it helps. I dont see any thing more complicated at this stage for the sputum blood but it may be fatal if you persistently smoked .

Wait for a week and if the hemoptysis does not subside then a little extensive work up would be needed but i am sure it wont come to that.

I hoep it helps take good care of yoruself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

may the odds be ever in your favour.

Thank you for the response. I still have 7 days of antis to finish, how long does it take usually for them to kick in? I have been coughing when I feel mucus in throat expelling brown stuff and if I cough real hard, I get a little blood in there. But in the morning, is when I see at least one good cough of pure red blood.

Brief Answer:
Lets wait for antibiotics to finish

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back!

Antibiotics start working the moment they are taken but sometimes the effect is visible only after a few days. Staying compliant with the medicines would help.

Now that you cough very hard, coughing itself is a trauma to the airways and it may cause bleeding on its own. Try symptomatic cough remedies for the cough and use precautions in diet and avoid triggers. Use boiled eggs, hot beverages, aspirin gargles to help the throat as it will reduce the irritation for the cough.

I hope it helps.
Take care.
