What Causes Decreased Hearing, Sinus Infection And Nausea?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: These two things might not be related but here goes. Ten years ago I got a severe sinus infection - in the right maxillary. I was complaining of bad ear pain so the doctor looked and it was fine. I got antibiotics but a few days into this infection I lost my hearing on the right. The sinus infection resolved but the hearing remained bad. I was seen by an ENT who did his thing with the tuning fork and said that I had otosclerosis and the sinus infection had nothing to do with it. The hearing gradually improved over 6-12 months, but I have about a 10% hearing loss. I never had any nausea or dizziness, but my right ear has always been painful with flying and even going up really steep roads. Fast forward 8 years when I suddenly, out of nowhere started to experience nausea and vomiting. The nausea would come out of no where and last several hours to several days. This went on for months. I had blood work and a gastroscopy which was negative. One day after weeks without any vomiting I became nauseous again after jumpng in the deep end of a pool, causing my bad ear to hurt. After that I decidedthat it must be an inner ear issue that was causing the nausea. I didn't have any more until the last month. I began having nausea, some vomiting and this time when I turn my head in certain directions the nausea intensifies. So after I started experiencing Rt sinus/face pain. eventhough my nasal discharge was perfectly clear I took antibiotics which made the nausea, vomtingand pain go away competely. But within 48 hours my nausea and pain were back. I took another round of antibiotics - this time clavulin/augmentin for 10 days. I finished yesterday and today the nausea and vomiting are back. I have been taking dimenhydranate for this with good results.
So my question is - is the lost of hearing and now years later, the nausea related to one another? If so, if I had the surgery for otosclerosis who that treat/fix the nausea and vomit? If it can't, then what do I do? - just take dimenhydramate for the rest of my life. I had an xray of my sinuses and this wasn't very impressive. My frontal sinuses didn't develop, and the maxillaries are small. It showed some thickening in my XXXXXXX sinsuses and irritation of the nasal mucosa.

Brief Answer:
Decrease hearing, sinus infection & nausea must be related.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query, reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

In my opinion, in your case to get proper diagnosis, you will need to do certain investigations which are not done earlier.

1) CT scan paranasal sinus 3mm coronal cuts to get extend of disease in sinuses.
2) Pure tone audiometry & Impedance audiometry with acoustic reflex to know degree & type of hearing loss. Also status of middle ear & confirm otosclerosis.

Decrease hearing, sinus infection & nausea must be related.

Before going for surgery we need to confirm it by doing above investigation.

Till the investigation done, i would advice

Steam Inhalation twice daily,
Saline nasal spray thrice daily,
Combination Steroid nasal spray with antihistamine 2 puff each nostril twice daily &
tab Rantac with dimenhydramate.
You will get relief.

Hope this information helpful to you. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Regards.
