What Causes Delayed Ejaculation After Increasing The Dosage Of Citalopram?
Question: Hello
My partner is taking antidepressant medications (citalopram and akamon) for approximately 6 months now. And although they helped him a lot, since the doctor increased his dose from 20 mg citalopram to 30 mg he developed delayed ejaculation problems. Actually, he cannot ejaculate at all during sexual intercourse. Only on his own, and still, it takes him a lot lot of time. The main problem is that we decided to start trying for a baby as we just recently got engaged. And we cannot. Is there any way to stop this? Is it possible to switch to a different antidepressant? Is this condition permanent?

Hello
Thanks for your answer.
He was diagnosed by a psychiatrist with anxiety disorder-not depression. He was having anxiety related dizziness and heart palpitations (panic attacks) and the doctor gave him abridepressants. He was seen by a neutologist and he said that he seems to be healthy and also suggested antidepressants. The problem started last month, after taking Citalopram for 6 months. He did!n't see an urologist yet.

Brief Answer:
An Urologist examination is needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i apologize first, as i read the anti-depressants in your question, and assumed it would be for depression.
Let me opine, that as he was ejaculating earlier, this may be a transient problem, or a side-effect,after stepping up the dose of Citalopram.
You'll need to discuss that with your Psychiatrist.
To know if the lack of ejaculate now,is due to an Urological cause, certain tests will be needed after an Urologist examines him :
1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine, sugar,creatinine,and LFT.
3. ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis.
4. TRUS( trans rectal ultrasound scan ).
According to the reports, the Urologist may be able to arrive at the cause for his problem, and advise corrective treatment.
Wish you both good health.
