What Causes Delayed Ejaculation While On Antidepressant Medication?
My partner is taking antidepressant medications (citalopram and akamon) for aproximately 6 months now. And although they helped him a lot, since the doctor increased his dose from 20 mg citalopram to 30 mg he developed delayed ejaculation problems. Actually, he cannot ejaculate at all during sexual intercourse. Only on his own, and still, it takes him a lot lot of time. The main problem is that we decided to start trying for a baby as we just recently got engaged. And we cannot. What can we do? Is it possible to switch to a different antidepressant? Is this condition permanent?
It is not permanent
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Helathcaremagic.
I read your query and understand your concerns.
Delayed ejaculation is common side effect of Citalopram and reverses back once it is discontinued. So regarding permanent change there is no need to worry.
Regarding changing to alternative antidepressant, yes it is possible and can be done safely. SNRI group of medications along with mirtazapine and bupropion are good alternatives.
The other option is to prescribe antidote for this side effect. In that regard wellbutrin is good option and can be started.
Regarding Akamon, it is not associated with delayed ejaculation and effect and can be safely continued if warranted.
I hope this answers your question.
