What Causes Delayed Menstruation And Negative Pregnancy Test?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: I'm currently on cycle day day 54, I did have had unprotected sex several times before my last period.
My cycles are always on time , every 28days... on day 22 I thought I started an unusual early period, only it was completely pain and bloating free that lasted 2-3 days and very light in colour I have not had any bleeding since.
As I didn't have another bleed as of last week, I decided to do HPT.
I've done four now and they are all negative.
I would of ruled out pregnancy from that point only my tummy has swollen forward at the bottom, I'm struggling to fit my clothes, I am a size 8, well I was 3-4 weeks ago...I have had complications conceiving before x2 mc.
Now I'm getting pain if I apply pressure on lower tummy, it's firm and tight.
Any suggestions ?

Hello XXXXXXX

If your pregnancy tests have all been negative, it's possible that your symptoms are from hormonal imbalances from not having actually ovulated. In that case there can be more PMS (bloating) type symptoms and the period may not come on time or be of it's usual nature.

Your doctor may give you a short course of a progestin, such as Provera, to finish off the cycle. (In a normal cycle, after ovulation, the ovaries naturally produce increased progesterone which matures the lining of the uterus.) When you finish taking the Provera, within a few days you will have a withdrawal bleed, if lack of ovulation was the problem.

That said, if you are getting pain in the lower abdomen, and if that pain is increasing, then I recommend not waiting for your appointment with your doctor as there could be risk of internal bleeding from endometriosis. This is less likely than anovulation which I described above; but if there is actual pain, then go in to the urgent care clinic or ER where they can examine you. A bimanual exam (2 fingers in vagina, other hand above pressing on ovaries or uterus) will give an idea of if endometriosis is the problem, because manipulation of these structures during the bimanual will cause increased pain. Then further evaluation can be done, such as a pelvic ultrasound.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know how you are doing after you have been evaluated.
