What Causes Delayed Periods After A Cervical Biopsy?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 May 2014
Question: Hi I'm 45 yrs old, I had a cervical biopsy done about 20 days ago, I bled for about 4 days after the procedure. My period a usually regular but this month I'm 3 days late. I should mention that I have been under a tremendous amount stress at work, not to mention the stress I experienced having to get a biopsy. I have experienced painful cramping and back pain the week leading up to my scheduled period but no period, continue to have them to date. The cramps are painful enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. Could the procedure be causing my period to be late.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry so much.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I completely understand your problem.

There are a few reasons for delayed periods. The commonest is stress, pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, peri menopause and ovarian cysts.

So please check if you have had unprotected sex since your last period. If no, then the other reasons are possibly causing it.

You already have been under a lot of stress. Stress is a major factor leading to hormonal imbalances and causing irregular preiods. So please do not get stressed. It just taxes our system, complicates issues, makes us irritable and infaltes our problems. Stress never provides a solution in fact it drifts us away from solutions. So please calm down. It is best to leave some things to nature and enjoy our beautiful life.

For women with similar history in my clinic I prefer to get a urine pregnancy test done 7-10 days after the missed period to rule out pregnancy. Then we just ask her to wait, follow a simple low sugar and fat diet and regular mild exercise daily along with meditation or any other se stressing method. Wait for 3-4 weeks, if still no periods then hormonal tests and ultrasound may be needed.

You are already having cramps. So most likely the periods are coming. Just calm down and they will come.

If pregnancy is supected get a pregnancy test done after 1 weeks to rule it out. Otherwise just modify your lifestyle and wait for a few more weeks.

Cervical biopsy does not delay periods. However if a uterine curetting was performed along with the biopsy then periods may get delayed. So please check with your doctor about this.

Please do not worry. I am always here to help if needed.

Take care.
Hope this satisfies your query.

Brief Answer:
If curetting was done then periods may be delayed

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

If a curettage was done then periods may be delayed as the uterine lining was removed by curetting. So just wait for a few more days for the periods.

However the investigation plan still remains the same. If you are sure that there is no chance of pregnancy then just wait. The periods will come but you will have to decrease your stress levels. If the stress shoots up then it causes hormonal upset and delays periods. It may take another 2-3 weeks for the periods to come and you can safely wait till then.

You may take tablet meftal P and will need to review with your doctor for the pain if it is severe.

Hope this was helpful.
