What Causes Diarrhea In Children Despite Giving First Full Course Of Antibiotics?

My baby is 1.5 years. She is having some stomach infection as she is having little loose motion. So the doctor told me to ofloxacin metronidazole suspension And lactic bacillus powder. I had given 1st full course. And now also the motion is still little greasy. And now the doctor asked me to continue one more course.
Continue the antibiotics for 5 days from starting the medicine. Not further

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I understand that your daughter has diarrhoea and you are concerned. Although most often such diarrhoea is caused due to a virus called rotavirus, some doctors prefer to prescribe antibiotics to be on the safe side. Irrespective of use of antibiotics, it generally lasts for 3-7 days. Since you have begun the medicine, please complete the full course of 5 days. You need not give it beyond that.
The mainstay of treatment is ORS or oral rehydration solution which can be prepared by mixing a full XXXXXXX of Pedialyte or other brands on ORS in the designated amount of water and given sip by sip. It will help in preventing dehydration which is the main cause of concern. If the replenishment of salts and water is adequate, dehydration will not occur. If the frequency of passage of urine comes down or if the child becomes lethargic, you will have to take the child to a doctor without delay.
Apart from giving lactobacillus sachets, also give plenty of curd since it contains beneficial bacteria lactobacillus, and should help.
Hope that helps.

They can be given along. No issues.

Thanks for asking back.
The antibiotics, azithromycin, ofloxacin and metronidazole, cover two different parts of the antibacterial spectrum. So, they should rather act synergistically if there is a bacterial cause behind each of them. But chances are, that in either case, the cause is viral, where antibiotics would be ineffective. Your doctor has decided to play safe. There is no harm if they are given, that too in combined form.
Please complete the course of antibiotics. Give steam inhalation if possible. Give ORS. Be patient. It may take some time, but soon things should be fine. Unless the child becomes lethargic, you need not worry.
