What Causes Diarrhea While On Zofran?

Posted on Tue, 17 Oct 2017
Question: 2 weeks ago I had my 8 month old grandson and he had a very bad case of diarrhea, I did change several of his diapers. On Monday, Sept. 18th I went on a cruise and I was feeling fine until Wed. Sept. 20th, that evening I had severe diarrhea (completely loose no stools). I rested and took Zofran to help with the nausea and cramps. I continued with the diarrhea Thur, Fri, Sat and today. I keep sipping on water and resting but this is no going away.
Important note I found out that my grandson's stool sample came back and he had Salmonella. I am not sure if I got my illness from him or on food from the cruise. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Most likely you got it from your grandson

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I can understand your concern.
Salmonella is a highly infective organism and to me it appears that you have got it from your grandson.
Unlike other bacterial infection salmonella does not need any antibiotic treatment (uses there is blood in stool) as this may prolong the illness.
I would request you to take frequent sips of ORS or other fluids to avoid dehydration. You may take dicyclomine to get relief from abdominal cramp. In case of vomiting take zofran.
Also please send your stool sample for test to find out the causative organism.
Salmonella diarrhea is a self limiting condition and most of the cases start recovering within 5-7 days.
In case you find any worsening in condition please consult your physician.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Wishing for your rapid recovery
Regards
