What Causes Difficulty In Passing Urine After Taking Tamsulosin?
I am 60, I was taking Tamsulosin (0.4 mg) for BPH for a couple years. It was not entirely effective at eliminating difficulty in urination. I asked my Dr. to switch me to Finasteride because I saw it also helped some with hair thinning which has started a bit for me. I have been taking Finasteride (5 mg) for about 5 months. For about the last the past 2 months I have been experiencing noticeable adema in my calves, ankles and feet. I looked up side affects of Finasteride today and have decided to stop taking it. I also saw that both Finasteride and Tamsulosin have the side affect of reducing ejaculate volume which has been going on for a couple years (I never connected the dots and looked at the side affects of Tamsolusin until today).
So... is there anything recommended for BPH other than medications that have the side affects of adema and disruption in sexual health (impotence, decreased sex drive, reduced ejaculate)?
Thanks, XXXXXXX
Need to consult qualified Urologist for assessment and investgations.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Based on the facts that you have posted it seems that you have obstructive voiding symptoms due to Enlarged Prostate for which you were taking Tomsulosin and switched to Fenesteride .
At the outset I would state that Tomsulosin and Fenesteride have different mode of action in Enlarged prostate .Tomsulosin relaxes smooth muscles in bladder neck and prostate and helps to improve urine flow and has no action in reducing size of the enlarged prostate .It has sied effect of retrograde ejaculation Where as Fenesteride reduces size of the prostate and has side effect of causing loss
of libido (sexual drive).
The drugs that are commonly used in enlarged prostate hare known to have these side effects and become ineffective after prolonged use .
I would suggest you to consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis and to explore the need for removing enlarged prostate by an endoscopic surgery of Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate (TURP).
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis with specific mention of post void residual urine
3) Serum PSA.
This is a gold standard surgery practiced all over the world and gives permanent results and helps to improve quality of life .
Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
