default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: Hello, My throat has felt a little odd for a few months now. The best description i have is that it feels sticky. Now I am experiencing soreness on the left side of my neck. i am wondering if it has something to do with my thyroid. My name is XXXXXXX and I am 48 years old.. I was wondering if i should go to a nose ear and throat specialist or just go to my regular doctor. i thought it would go away on its own but now i am getting worried. Please advise. Thank you so much!!!!!

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

This discomfort in your throat for some months now, might be caused from the irritation of the throat due to inflammation and the presence of secretions there.
It might be due to post-nasal drip. Most common causes are rhinitis, acid reflux ,seasonal allergy, structural abnormalities like deviation of septum nasi.
Usually thyroid problems don't cause such symptoms but examination is needed.

Since these symptoms have been there for months, you need evaluation to determine the cause.

I would suggest to consult first you general doctor because you need a general evaluation. If it is necessary he will address you to a specialist.
A detailed medical history ,associated symptoms, physical examination of your nose, throat and thyroid gland.
You may need to run some tests to evaluate your thyroid function (fT3,fT4 and TSH).

Hope it helps.Let me know if you have any other question or doubts to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,

Thank you very much. That was helpful. I smoked when I was younger so of course I thought the worst. I will get it checked out this week.

Hello.

You are totally welcome.

There are many possible causes for such symptoms.Try not to think bad things and get examined. If the cause would be a serious throat condition most likely you would have objektive symptoms apart this sensation of sticky throat.

I wish you all the best.

Kind regards.
