What Causes Discomfort On Right Side Of Abdomen After Having Bowel Movement?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Apr 2015
Question: I am worried..I don't know why but yesterday as well as today, when I went to the bathroom, after I had a bowel movement my bottom right side of the stomach felt weird..it doesn't hurt but it's like this pokey feeling..and now when I pee I keep getting this pokey feeling at the bottom right side of my stomach. I feel it when I am walking too..I don't know why. I also hold that spot where I get the pokey feeling after I pee..because it's getting really uncomfortable and it's the spot where there's a bone after the breast and some skin ..it's not all the way towards the bottom of my stomach. Its kind of near the spot of my appendicitis but not exactly. Sometimes I do get this pokey feeling but it doesn't last this long..is it a urinary infection or do I still have poo stuck in my stomach?

Brief Answer:
It may be incomplete evacuation of stool

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

It does not seem very serious from your history. It may be incomplete evacuation of stool due to less motility or may be stomach infection. Urinary infection is unlikely because there is no burning micturition or associated fever or urinary discharge as per your history. If they are present, an urine test can be done and antibiotics started. Also, your food habit and bowel habit if altered, then these features can occur. Also you have a previous history of appendicitis so an USG (ultrasound) of whole abdomen should be done to rule out associated causes. When patients with symptoms like yours come to me, I suggest the following-

Have a healthy diet with more dietary fibers and less fat and junk.
Take decolic tab if pain occurs.
Take tab pantoprazole-levosulpiride once daily in empty stomach for 15 days.
Take tab ofloxacin-ornidazole twice daily for 5 days for stomach infection.
Get USG whole abdomen done.
Get a blood for complete hemogram done.
Get an urine routine and microscopic examination done.
Exercise daily to enhance metabolism.

You can discuss with your treating doctor for prescription of the above. Get back to me with the reports or consult your doctor.

Hope I have answered your question.

I think you were right about the incomplete stool, I had the same problem today..the pokey feeling lasted for three whole days and finally around 10 pm, the rest of my stool came out. I no longer have the pokey feeling anymore, but it really hurts my head when I try to push the stool out..what foods can I eat to have a more easier bowel movement? I actually don't really eat junk food, I eat mainly veggies/fish and on occasionally some meat. I do eat unsalted crackers (the square ones from whole foods), and sometimes some cookies. But..I think you're right about the exercise..I need to try to exercise more. I also take pro-biotic pills to help my stool, but sometimes when I study for long periods of time..I don't really move and sometimes after I eat dinner I have a stomache. Do you know whats the cause of this? Also today, early this morning..my stomach was really sensitive to the food I ate..and I usually don't encounter this since I eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast. I had a short stomach for a while..but that was also when I had the pokey feeling going on in my stomach. Do I just have a bad stomach? Because I always have problems with my stomach..and it really concerns me, please help.

Brief Answer:
MODIFY YOUR DIET

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Its good to know that your stomach discomfort was somewhat relieved. In some individuals, the metabolism is somewhat not up to the mark and they suffer from indigestion and incomplete evacuation. The aid to this is proper diet and exercise. Do the following-

If you have not taken ofloxacin-ornidazole yet, take only ofloxacin 200 mg twice daily for 5 days.
Continue the pantoprazole-levosulpiride combination for 15-20 days.
Probiotic pills are good for bowel movements, you can continue those.
Withhold decolic tablet.
Withhold urine examination and USG abdomen.
However, get the blood test done.
Do exercises like brisk walking for 30mins a day or preferably swimming or cycling. These when done regularly help metabolism immensely.
Taking oats for breakfast is very healthy. For rest of the day, take small meals every 4-5 hours rather than heavy meals. Have your meal at regular times per day. Have more dietary fibers, fresh fruits and vegetables; less fat and oil which you said you don't take much (that's good), avoid red meat etc. I know its quite a lot of restrictions but if you still feel confused, it would be best to consult a dietitian and get a proper diet schedule.
Consult your doctor for prescription of the above.

Wish you good health.

Brief Answer:
YOU CAN TAKE LACTULOSE SYRUP BUT NOT NEEDED

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

There might be some mild stomach infection present along with altered bowel clearance. That's why, I advised you to take ofloxacin which is an antibiotic. Take its full course for 5 days and you will be alright.

There are ways to clear stool quickly but unless you are suffering from constipation, you don't need to take them. However, if you are constipated, you can take lactulose syrup 20ml after dinner and your stool will be cleared next day. But I don't think you need it. Just follow the previous instructions.

The rest of the stool came out today, so now I am totally fine. I also had some gas issues..because I felt short intervals of discomfort in the upper back, chest, stomach.. But after the stool came out, I felt like my body went back to normal. No more of the pokey feeling in the stomach anymore.

Brief Answer:
GOOD TO KNOW YOU ARE WELL

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Its excellent to know you are fit again.
But as you seem prone to indigestion and dismotility, continue with the drugs and finish the course which I prescribed. You can continue taking tab pantoprazole after that also if needed. Continue healthy diet and exercise.

Wish you good health.
Take care.
