To answer your questions one by one:
1. my appetite is fine
2. I do not feel lethargic, tired or sluggish
3. no change in bowel habits
4. stool is brown; urine is pale yellow
5. I take no medications
6. no history of diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis, cancer or other major illness
7. no known family history of any of those illnesses
8. the whites of my eyes do appear yellow at times - this is what first sent me to my doctor, although he said they did not look yellow to him.

Most likely hepatobiliary(liver & bile channels) pathology
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the answers. I've gone through them.
Your symptoms are suggesting most likely hepatic pathology. Liver causes metabolism of blood product(heme) into bilirubin which is yellow in color. Now for some reasons(e.g infection, stone, etc) if liver does not breakdown bilirubin into specific products then it gets accumulated in the body and imparts yellow color, more specifically on skin and in eyes(sclera). I would suggest the patient to visit hospital and get an appointment with a gastroenterologist. He will perform complete examination and will advise some investigations like Ultrasound hepatobiliary channels, Liver Function tests(LFTs) & CBC to confirm the diagnosis. Further treatment will depend upon the lab results.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
