What Causes Dizziness And Memory Loss In A Person Doing Night Shifts?

default
Posted on Tue, 26 May 2015
Question: I sometimes work night shifts and keep getting dizzy and forgetful after 3 am. I was concussed playing rugby several times and was kicked unconscious for 10 mins once but that was nearly 20 years ago. Could it be connected or are there other causes?

1) I have had the problem in various intensity since being kicked unconscious 19 years ago- I only work occasional night shifts.
2) It can last for several hours until I get to bed. (I was only unconscious for 8-10 minutes).
3) It happens occasionally when I am concentrating very hard on a cognitive challenge in the day time but fades after the task ends. It kicks in after approx 3 am - when I get more tired - and generally remains but is more noticeable if I am up and actively moving around. My ability to retain and process new info also seems affected at the time. And my absent mindedness has increased generally over the last few years with me quite often doing tasks twice and forgetting others.
4) No.
5) 75 mg of asprin most days.
6) Not that I know of although my dad is a tense man. I don't think I am.

Brief Answer:
needs further management; get an appointment for a Neurologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. I have gone through them. there is possibility that past trauma has resulted in brain insult. Now whenever there is stress(of any kind) then it results in hypoxia (decreased oxygen supply to brain) resulting in dizziness. I would suggest you to visit hospital and get an appointment for a "Consultant Neurologist". He will perform complete neurological examination including some investigations like MRI-Brain & EEG to check the status of brain activity. Further management will depend upon the lab results. Meanwhile i would suggest you following things:

- take adequate rest of 6-7hrs at least/day
- try not to take stress. Stress almost always aggravates a problem.
- Go out for a walk in the evening for 30-45mins. It will change the environment & make you fresh & healthy.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
