What Causes Dizziness And Nausea After Taking Ferrochel?
Question: My daughter started taking an iron supplement called Ferrochel due to her low ferritin levels. She is 16 and a runner. She just started taking this new supplement 2 days ago. Today was her first workout and she felt very dizzy, nausea, and she said her heart was hurting for a bit. She did not feel well at all. Could this be the result of this iron supplement. She takes 2 pills @ 27 mgs each She previously had taken a liquid form but her ferritin levels dropped. Apparently the liquid form was not a good product. It was recommended to her that she take this new pill form

Brief Answer:
Side effects of the supplements
Detailed Answer:
Dear parent , I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but unfourtanetly oral iron supplements can cause various side effects which includes nausea, constipation, loss of apetite , heartburn, vomiting, and diarrhea. These effects are generally dose-related and tend to decrease by decreasing the ingested dose .. I would recommend that she takes the iron supplements with meals , to decrease its irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract.
Also it is expected that her stools may appear darker in color while taking the supplements . I hope you find this helpful .

Thank you...I do have another question..could she have had some sort of iron overdose? I say this because her mg of iron were increased and she ate a lot of iron fortified foods. Was it too much for her body? She doesn't have an issue with constipation or her stools. It just seems that when she has to exert herself in exercise, she gets dizzy and fatigued.
Her original ferritin levels last winter were 16ng/ml. She stated taking liquid iron (1 teaspoon) and her levels XXXXXXX to 38ng/ml in 2 months. I switched liquid iron because I could order them from XXXXXXX and when she had blood work done last week the ferritin levels dropped to 23. I therefore switched her to Natures Bounty iron pills (65mg)... But was told that they were useless so I went with the Ferochel pills. She just started taking them Saturday... And today she has felt the worst she has felt during her workout than ever before. Dizzy, nausea, heart pain... Could the Ferochel dosage have been too high.? Are her symptoms signs of an iron overdose?

Brief Answer:
No
Detailed Answer:
Dear parent, no she is not likely to be experiencing an overdose as the normal ferritin level is up to 150 ng/ml .. but some iron preparations are not very well tolerated and can cause various side effects such as those she is experiencing . I hope you find this helpful ..
