Posted on Sat, 15 Nov 2014
Question: My 12 year old daughter says she feels like she is going to pass out after she eats a meal. ( she hasn't and not when she eats a snack size portion). Says she feels dizzy weak and nauseated for a few minutes. The dr said he has never heard of this happening only after a meal. She has also said her veins and bones hurt at times. All her blood work is normal. What could cause this? What type of dr and tests should I be looking at?

Brief Answer:
May be Gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Thanks for posting in Healthcaremagic

The symptoms that you have mentioned and also the age group of the child match with a disease called Gastritis which is very common in this age group of girls particularly those having any form of stress.

Gastritis causes nausea particularly after feeds associated with intermittent heart burns.

Follow the advise and you will get results in a month-
1. Try to talk with your girl more particularly in the areas she feels stressed and needs help. Let her play and enjoy her favorite activities more.
2. Do not let her to stay in empty stomach for more than 3 hours.
3. Avoid too hot, too sour, Too spicy foods for 1 month.
4. Take Capsule Omeprazole 20 mg daily in empty stomach for 6 weeks.

You can consult child guidance clinic, gastroenterologist and may require to undergo endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis of gastritis.
Hope this helps.

My17 year old son has acid reflux since birth. He has has gastritis and pancreatitis many times. But she has never had heartburn or any pain in her stomach. And would gastritis cause pain in your bones and veins?

Brief Answer:
increased chance of gastritis

Detailed Answer:
As there is a sibling history of gastritis the chances of similar disease in her increases. From my point of view as far as the symptoms you referred match with gastritis.

Bone and vein pain does not occur in gastritis. But I think these are non specific manifestation of the stress, anxiety or mental depression she is going through. These stress are also a contributing factor for development of gastritis.

Examining and talking with the patient would have given me a clear picture.

Hope these helps.
