Question: My 17 year old daughter is in good health. Over the last month, she has been having dizzy spelsl, brief moments of blackouts, a feeling of disconnect with her body, sharp tingling in her arms and legs and feels like fainting. Sometimes, her limbs with twitch when she has these episodes. I would say she has had 3 or 4. Today, it happened again. Everything went black and all the symptoms occurred. I want to take her to get checked out. I am concerned these symptoms can be a sign of something more serious. She has not passed out, but has felt like she was close to losing consciousness. What could be occurring? What type of doctor should we go see? What type of tests should we run? She is not pregnant, although she is on birth control pills for six months. She says she is not experiencing side effects from the pills. She takes no other medication. She does not have an eating disorder. I know she eats regularly, although she needs a little healthier diet. She is stretched then with high school, extracurricular activities and a part time job. She is a busy young lady but manages well. I have asked if she is feeling exhaustion. She gets tired, but doesn't feel like it is extreme. Emotionally stable. Mentally stable. Physically stable, except for above. Advice?

Brief Answer:
Could seizures or rhythm disturbances

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have gone through the history in detail and these possibilities come to my mind -
1. Complex partial seizures - She will need an EEG and then decide whether she need medications or not. If the EEG shows seizure activity - then definitely she will require anti seizure medications. She needs to see a neurologist.

2. Rhythm disturbances in the heart - This is common in this age group and the symptoms too look similar. She will require an ECG and if it abnormal - she will need to consult a cardiologist.

3. This is doesn't seem to be related to the OC pills she is taking.

Should we go to the emergency room? Is this something we need to pursue immediately? Or can it wait for a regular appointment?

Brief Answer:
Immedate attention is required

Detailed Answer:
You should go to the emergency room and get her checked immediately - if it is seizure then - each seizure can precipitate one more seizure episode due to irritation of the brain.
I suggest you not to wait for regular appointment.
