Brief Answer:
needs evaluation.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that your father is having dry mouth.

Dry mouth could be drug induced (anti depressents) or due to secondary to nasal obstruction (cold, sinus infection, turbinate hypertrophy, obesity) or due to salivary gland abnormalities.

I suggest you to follow these measures to overcome the issue of dry mouth.

1. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but even more preferably, after every meal and before bedtime.

2. Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride (pepsodent).

3. Drink water frequently to keep your mouth moist and loosen mucus.

4. Avoid commercial mouth rinses or mouthwashes that contain alcohol or peroxide. These ingredients will further dry out your mouth.

5. Salagen, Evoxac, Biotene Oral Balance and Oasis Moisturizing Mouth Spray are available as over the counter medications for dry mouth.

Kindly evaluate with ent surgeon for the exact cause of drying, before giving over the counter medications.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
