Posted on Mon, 8 May 2017
Question: Hi Doctor, I observed one thing that sometimes, after climbing stairs (4 floors ), when i stop and take rest and try to talk, i feel sudden jerk from my chest. it does not happen all the time when i climb, it happens once in a while. Again the jerk is not while climbing, it is happening after i relax.
It is a terrying experience lasts for fractions of seconds, i really get scared. and nothing happens after that, i do normal jobs after that, i took ecg and coming alright.

I feel no pain on the chest while climbing or after

My questions are :
1. why the jerks after relaxing ?
2. why does this not happen during climbing ?
is there any test should i take ?

Brief Answer:
Maybe muscle spasm or gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

I understand your concern but your symptom is nothing to worry about. There can be causes such as gastritis, muscle strain/spasm, dehydration etc. Heart problems are very unlikely but it is better if you can get an ECG done to rule out heart related problems. Other conditions such as thyroid, vitamin B12 deficiency, anemia can also lead to the symptoms you have.

You are not feeling the jerks during climbing because the muscle is in stress. During relaxation, muscles also relax leading to jerk which can be due to gastritis or muscle spasm.

I would suggest you to meet your physician for a complete blood test, get Vitamin B12 and D test and Thyroid profile.

Do not worry. Try these home remedies:
- Drink plenty of water min 2 to 3 lts.
- Avoid oily and fatty foods.
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Deep breathing exercises.

In case your symptoms persist or worsens, it is best to meet your physician for a detailed examination and treatment.

I hope this answered your query.
