What Causes Elevated ALT Levels When Suffering From Leaky Gut Syndrome?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Feb 2015
Question: I have leaky gut syndrome. 3weeks ago, My ALT liver enzyme test came back at 74. My AST is 19. 8 months ago my AST was normal and my ALT was 34. Before that, both my AST & ALT were normal. I have a flair up of leaky gut. Do you think that's causing my ALT levels to spike? I wonder why the ALT is so high and the AST is not.

Brief Answer:
Need to rule out autoimmune causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.

I understand your query and concern.
I have gone through your uploaded images as well.

Leaky gut is definitely known to cause serious food disturbances.

But it is not frequently associated with any abnormalities in liver function tests.

Elevation of ALT out of proportion of AST warrants careful search of ongoing Hepatocellular damage.

We need to identify that and direct the therapy.

Since you are already being tested for Viral Hepatitis C(Results due),I advise you to get a complete Autoimmune Screen test to detect any gut autoimmune disorders which are usually associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Post your further queries,if any.

Thank you.

Thank you Dr. Do you think my symptoms and blood work are consistant with a blockage? Every time I eat now, my eyes get red/ yellowish. This has not occurred in the past until recently. I read somewhere that a blockage in the liver duct should be ruled out.

Brief Answer:
Obstructive liver disease is a also a possibility.Needs confirmation

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.

I understand your concern.

Yes there is a possibility of obstructive liver disease due to jaundiced eyes.

But this usually associated with significant elevation in ALP enzyme(alkaline phosphatase enzyme) on liver function tests.

Since you have not mentioned ALP levels ,I have not considered it in my initial diagnosis.

In order to confirm Obs Liv Dis-You need to undergo ERCP testing-Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio pancreatography.

Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.

Thank you Dr. I'll ask my physician to order that test. She didnt test my ALP .
I'll need to get that done. My Urine is a good light yellow color. I read that dark/brownish urine is a sign of liver cancer. Is that correct?

Brief Answer:
EXtremely a rare possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.

I understand your concern.

Dark/brownish coloured urine is not always an ominous sign of Liver malignancy.

The discoloured urine is due large amounts of bilirubin in the blood/jaundice,which is lost in the urine-bilirubinuria.

In fact liver cancers rarely present with jaundice.

Hence this possibility is extremely rare.

Thank you.
