What Causes Elevated IgG Antibody Levels In Blood?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: I have been significantly fatigued over the last two weeks. I was seen at Urgent Care after a serious drug interaction between Tenazadine, Requip, and Norco. The doctor tested me for HH6, EBV, and CMV. I've been fighting Fibromyalgia for years, and three years ago, suffered from what appeared to be a stroke. However, the CT came back negative. I know that most of us are positive for these viruses, but I'm still concerned. I was positive for everything except for CMV. The IgM titers all came back within normal limits, but the IgG titers returned elevated with HH6 being 3.18 (not bad, I understand). However, CMV was 270 when a high reading is >21. This seems excessive to me. Should I be concerned? And, should I have my husband tested? He has myastenia gravis, and has been sleeping most of the time. He's also been complaining of headaches and nausea. He takes Mestanon. Also, my grand daughter was here only a four days prior to my becoming ill. She had a temperature of over 103 degrees, but didn't appear to be sick. In fact, she was quite energetic and happy. She was fine the following day. (She's only 18 mos old.) Should I inform the parents?

Brief Answer:
High IgG titers should not be a big problem!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these high titers. However, high IgG titers and not IgM are suggestive of a past infection and not a recent infection. This means that you had an infection in the past and not now. There is no ongoing infection and there is really no need to get your husband tested at this time. Also, you cannot infect others when there are no clues as to an active infection which is marked by high IgM levels. Please, let your grand daughter be and do not create panic in the parents.

In all, this is suggestive of past infections, you are not infectious and this requires no further medical attention based on elevated IgG titers only.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
