Question: My son is 3 years old and blood results come back with highly elevated bun levels as well as b12 levels of over 1000. What could be causing this. Also complains of stomach pain and frequent urination .
Brief Answer:
Bloidwork
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for your question. I am sorry your son is not well. Firstly, one of the most common reasons for abnormal numbers on a blood test is human or lab error. It might be useful to repeat the blood work in order to confirm the numbers. The numbers you refer to are related to the kidney. Typically, these numbers are elevated when there is some kidney issue. Though these numbers do not specifically tell us what the issue with the kidneys are, followup with a specialist will lead to the correct result. Most issues are treatable. However, until more is known, it would be unwise to speculate as to what the core problem is. I recommend close consultation with your doctor and a kidney specialist. Good luck.
We had the bloodwork redone twice and it was the same both times. His pediatrician tells me to see a gi dr but i was wondering if it would be better to see a kidney dr .
Brief Answer:
GI vs Kidney
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your follow up question.
It certainly wont hurt to see both. Instinctively I feel a kidney doctor will be more beneficial. But if your pediatrician is recommending a GI doctor, I would start there first. Your pediatrician has had the opportunity to examine your son and is more familiar with his medical history. I sincerely hope the diagnosis is made soon and it turns out to be something minor.
Regards,
