Brief Answer: Gutka should be stopped, lipid profile deranged Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query on Healthcaremagic. Before answering your query I would like to give you some general information. Your reports show an increase in levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. In common language you have elevated cholesterol and you need to take cholesterol lowering drugs and life style modifications for optimal results. LDL, VLDL, triglycerides are component of cholesterol and these component have different effect on the body. These cholesterols increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Medications need to be taken to lower the deranged lipids. Life style modifications include weight reduction, regular exercising, avoiding high calorie foods, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption. Smoking or taking tobacco in any form has deleterious effect on the body and the lipid profile. Thus, chewing gutka should be stopped as it will increase the lipid levels. Alcohol should also be consumed in moderation and best avoided as it can also lead to elevation of lipid levels. Tobacco besides deranging lipid profile can also cause various cancers ranging from oral cancer to lung cancer, to pancreatic cancer to bladder cancer. It is one of the most carcinogenic substance known. Besides lipid profile, the liver functions are also marginally deranged. The liver enzymes SGOT, SGPT are also raised. The liver enzymes are raised in damage to hepatocytes or liver cells. An ultrasound abdomen can help to know the status of liver. The phosphorus is also marginally elevated, however, the rise is so small that it can be ignored. The drugs prescribed by your doctor are for lowering lipid level and they should be taken without fail. If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer. Dr Shailja P Wahal
