What Causes Elevated Heart Rate And Shallow Breathing After Having Bentyl?
Question: Hi, my mother is 64. She has ILD & had a severe case of reflux & hyperacidity yesterday. We gave her mucin gel & bentyl. Her acidity got cured, but had elevated heart rate & shallow breathing for several hours. Her fingers turned numb & blue. Can a single 20mg bentyl cause such a reaction?
Brief Answer:
Can cause reactions
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
Tab bentyl is notorious to cause such reactions, I have a had a patient who developed similar issue with Tab Bentyl. I strongly recommend that you do not give your mother Bentyl again without medical supervision.
I would like to add here that most people think that the adverse reactions are dose dependent but it is not the case, people can develop reactions and adverse events to extremely small doses as well.
I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
Regards

Hello Doctor,
We had given her just one tablet whose dose was 20mg. Is this enough to create a reaction that becomes almost life threatening?
Is it possible to know the best way to handle such a situation?

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for getting back
Yes it is possible to have a reaction to a small dose of any drug for that matter . Please be careful from the next time. These are the steps you can take from next time
1. Put the patient down on the bed or on the floor
2. Make sure that the face is turned to any one side if the patient is vomiting
3. Feel for the pulse, compare it with your own pulse. If is more rapid and feeble then I suggest you to raise the leg end
5. Call for help immediately
I hope I was of help
