What Causes Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels?

alcoholic hepatitis
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Having the liver enzymes that elevated means that you have alcoholic hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver caused by excessive alcohol. You should also be tested for hepatitis B and C just to make sure you do not have both illnesses.
Eight units of alcohol on weekends is directly toxic to your liver and blood cells. Any alcohol consumption should be stopped immediately to allow your liver and blood cells to recover.
If you find that you are unable to stop the alcohol consumption please seek assistance from a substance abuse counselor or a treatment center.
You are very young and if you are able to get rid of the alcohol now your body will most likely recover completely allowing you to have a healthy life.
I wish you the best,

Takes time
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It takes time for your liver to heal. As young as you are it should heal. You just have to let the doctor follow the liver enzymes and make sure they come back to normal. If they are not going back to normal your doctor may want to do an ultrasound or other testing.
You need to eat some protein, eating just fruit is not healthy.
You need to eat more vegetables than fruits and some sort of protein, like meat or tofu or nuts.
You need carbohydrates, proteins and fats in your diet to stay healthy. Take a multivitamin daily and make sure it has both thiamine and folate in it. Drink plenty of water.

need Hepatitis C testing
Detailed Answer:
It is good that you got a hepBsAg test but you also need testing for Hepatitis C. the increasing SGPT makes it look more like a viral hepatitis than alcoholic, though even if you have hepatitis C the alcohol can make it worse. But since you stopped drinking, that may be why the SGOT is coming down.
Taking the Ursocol should be fine. It should not harm the platelet count.

Glad to hear it
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up. I am happy to see that platelet count and HCV. It certainly can take several months for the numbers to get back down to normal. I wish you the best.

sorry for delay
Detailed Answer:
I have been traveling and had no internet access. Sorry for the delay in response.
I think this looks good and is very hopeful that the numbers will return to normal. I would suggest stopping the ursocol and checking labs again in 3-4 weeks and see where you are at that time.
I wish you the best,
Dr. Robinson
