What Causes Elevated Liver Enzymes While On Atorvastatin?

Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: I have been having problems with elevated liver enzymes, while taking atorvastatin.
Will I have the same problem if I start taking Livalo, as my pcp has suggested.

We are currently trying to get my liver enzymes back to normal....I am also pre-diabetic.
Would milk thistle be of any benefit in lowering the elevated enzymes?

Brief Answer:
Laval would most likely cause an increase. Milk thistle has no benefits!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Increased liver enzymes while on statins is well known and this includes pitavastatin(Livalo). However, the enzymes values must more than double to justify discontinuation.

Is your doctor stopping the drug with any increase or with an increase that meets these conditions ? You may also upload results of past tests before starting statins and after being on statins for me to review and see whether the increase is out of the expected range and warrants that the drug should be discontinued.

In all, increases are expected and drugs are only discontinued is the increases are beyond the expected range.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Regards
