What Causes Elevated Liver Enzymes?
Question: I just took a blood test and have slightly elevated alt of 52. I had a case of gastritis last year and have been experiencing dyspepsia ever since. I tested negative for hepatitis b and c ten months after unprotected sex. Should I still be worried about hepatitis?
Brief Answer:
Get re tested.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
See, rise in liver enzymes is always not due to Hepatitis B and C, but yes they should be checked.
As far as reliability of these tests are concerned, these tests get positive after Antibody formation that might take 4-6 weeks after getting the Infection.
So, you should get your Hepatitis B and C Checked again.
Also, get a complete Liver Function Test and share the report with me.
In Case, you consume alcohol or pain killers, they might be the reason for such rise in Liver enzymes.
Review with reports.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
Get re tested.

The hepatitis test was taken 10 months after possible infection. Wouldn't that be enough time. I did retake the test on Friday and am waiting for the results. I just wanted to release some worry if possible.
Brief Answer:
That would have been positive with in 10 mon
Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
If you would have caught Hepatitis B or C Infection then it would have come positive after 10 months. So , chances of having Hepatitis B and C are negligible from that exposure. But its important to get it tested to be sure, that you have not got it from any other source later.
Also, if your Hepatitis B comes out to be negative then , get yourself vaccinated for Hepatitis B.
