What Causes Elevated Serum Creatinine And Low GFR?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: On 10 April I had blood and urine tests performed At that time my serum creatinine was 1.18 and gfr estimation was 61, where it seemed to hover for the last few years. When I retook the test on 6/2 the readings were 1.74 and 39 respectively. Is it possible there was an error in the test, or can the results change this dramatically in a short time. I am a 71 year old male

Brief answer....yes it is possible
Detailed answer..
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
It is definitely possible for serum creatine to rise and GFR to reduce in such a short span of time and there  can be numerous reasons for it,like...
..if you have had some infection like urinary tract infection or even common infections like cold ,pneumonia, intestinal infections etc.
...if you have had uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes
...Improper intake of renal toxicity medicines like pain killers etc.
....Dehydration due to fever or sweating or diuretics or less water intake
....over tiredness
The best for you would be to get the test repeated after 4 weeks to see whether it is actually a error or due to some disease process or some reason as listed above.
Do consult your doctor regarding this and follow his advice.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
