What Causes Elevated Serum Folate Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: My blood tests all came back back good except for the b12 and folate numbers which came back high, 1746 and 20.00. Kidneys, liver and blood counts were good, all things are good except the b12. What is your opinion? My doctor is unavailable for several days and I am very concerned. I take no daily vitamins. I take no prescriptions.

Hi,

This is quite uncommon without being on supplements. I suggest that you provide an image of the results so that I can look at all the other details to see if there are elements which can help interpret this. Also, I will be able to see and review the method used for the test.

Brief Answer:
I will suggest that this test should be repeated!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed the attached results. You are not anemic and not being on any supplements, it becomes difficult to understand what the possible cause of this. My immediate though is to find out if this value is for real. Also, check to make sure you are not consuming any food types which are heavily fortified with vitamin B12 and folate.

In all,

1. Get this test repeated.
2. Review your regular foods intake to see if any is fortified in Vit B12 and folate.

Keep me posted.

Brief Answer:
I will say do not worry about this!

Detailed Answer:
HI,

High folates and Vitamin B12 levels are really very very rare observations and in most cases related to excess food intake. I will suggest that you review your diet to look for possible foods such as eggs, dairy products, etc with added quantities of these vitamins. However, these increases have no clinical significance. What we bother about are low levels and not high levels.

I wish you well.
