What Causes Elevated Total Serum Protein?
Question: I am concerned about an elevated protein total serum. Previously it was up to nine but has gradually come down to 8.3. My doctor wants me to have a protein electrophoresis blood test. What causes an elevated protein and is it necessary to have this test when the number has come down so much?
Brief Answer:
dehydration usually
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
a high total serum protein is usually caused by dehydration. The interesting part about serum proteins is the measurement of albumin and globulins. If the globulins are elevated then this is a cause for concern. In that case, serum protein electrophoresis is warranted. Otherwise there is no need for it.
I hope I've addressed your concerns!
